High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is an innovative new procedure for the treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer.  HIFU utilizes focused ultrasound energy to create pinpoint areas of heat which lead to tissue destruction.  With its extreme accuracy, prostate cancer can be treated and nearby sensitive tissue can be preserved.  This leads to a low risk of troubling side effects such as incontinence and impotence that result from currently available treatment options such as radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy and cryotherapy.

Since HIFU is not  FDA approved, it is not yet available in the United States. While considered "investigational" in the United States, it is presently used in many areas of the world including Europe, Canada, South America, and Asia,  There is  data showing prostate cancer control with minimal side effects from many world wide research centers.  FDA approval is anticipated in 2 to 3 years.

As a leader in prostate cancer treatment, Urology Associates Ltd has been offering HIFU since 2009.  Dr. Jeffry Twidwell and Dr Roland Ugarte presently perform the procedure.  Physicians travel with their patients to the Bahamas and Mexico for treatment.  Dr. Twidwell was the first Minnesota physician to complete HIFU training and thus far has the largest experience in the Twin Cities area.

The patients and physicians generally arrive 1 day prior to their procedure and depart 1 - 2 days post procedure.  Throughout their stay, patients have frequent contact with the HIFU physicians and nurses.  There is a preop meeting the night before the procedure to answer any last minute questions and review post procedure instructions.  Transportation is provided to and from the hospital for the patient and their guest.  After returning to the hotel, a trained, US nurse is available 24 hours to answer any questions that may arise.

Dr. Twidwell has been very pleased with the results of HIFU.  Patients experience very little pain and are up and active within hours of the procedure. Prostate cancer control has been achieved with few side effects.  As Dr. Twidwell states, "HIFU has provided a treatment option that addresses both cancer control and quality of life.  It truly is a win - win".
